Closed-Circle.net - ebooks and audio

I'm doing my part as a fan to spread the fan love, like any good Scaper or Browncoat would.

Hey fans, need some new ebooks and audiobooks? Want some new ebooks and audiobooks of old favorites?

Closed-Circle.net (mind the dash) is a venture between C.J. Cherryh, Jane Fancher, and Lynn Abbey.

There, you'll find new ebooks this year, with more coming, and newly available, Audible.com audiobooks. Click the links at Closed-Circle.net to give an extra boost to the authors and get the audiobooks from Audible.

C.J. Cherryh has newly revised editions of three of her books up. She has said these are the way she wants them, that the older editions were written when a lot of bad things were happening in her personal life and there was a turnover at the publisher's. But she has newly revised and rewritten these, and they are now available to readers the way she wants them.

* Rusalka, Chernevog, and coming in May or June, Yvgenie -- Russian tales of a young man dealing with love and wizardry and a good friend and the spirit of a woman.

Lynn Abbey has four novels, her Orion's Children / Time series. A woman's ordinary life becomes more complicated when something happens and she becomes unstuck in time.

* Out of Time, Behind Time, Taking Time, Down Time.

Jane Fancher has a new short story in one series, with a novel in her Netwalkers series upcoming.

* Moonlover and the Fountain of Blood -- Blood Red Moon series. -- A new stake going back to old vampire legend roots.

In audiobooks, C.J. Cherryh's Cyteen is now available. Upcoming are Downbelow Station, Foreigner, and Chanur.

Be sure to check the other books available at Closed-Circle.net. These ladies are putting more of their work out in ebooks themselves, and many of their other books are becoming available from their publishers as ebooks. You'll also find printed books in paperback and hardbound.

Hi everyone,

I've already made a few posts here, but I'm still a new guy, so I thought I'd make a proper introduction thread for myself. So hi!

A bit about myself: i'm in the UK, and am a computer science graduate and general code monkey. I'm also in the early phases of my own fan series. I won't deny that it was watching Hidden Frontier and Intrepid that inspired me to do this. You guys rock!

`` The Refrigerator Box"

Imagination and memories are funny things. They can kick-in at any time...Today I suddenly started remembering about ``The Refrigerator Box"".
Many years ago, when the kids were very little...we ordered a new refrigerator. When it came, the delivery guys removed the box in order to get it through the door.
After it was installed,an they left...the box sitting in the driveway gave me an idea. I dragged the pieces of the box down into the Rec room. Using duct tape, small bolts & nuts, i re-assembled the box on it's side(minus one side...which would be the top). Using a handful of colored Magic-Markers, a utility knife, ruler,
yardstick, math set, and a Star Trek: Star Fleet Technical Manual...I set to work.
Inside the cardboard``starship", I created a warp core, transporter pad, and Helm an Navigation stations. For lack of a viewscreen, I cut windows in the front, and covered them from the outside with a wallpaper that showed Moons and Planets. I cut slits in the side...an folded them out(now they would look like ``West coast mirrors" on the sides of a van.) I covered them with bits of the same wallpaper(so the kids could `` see" where they had been).
Using the utility knife, I made a large cut like an inverted U, in the back of the box. This was their ``Hatch/loading Ramp".
Like Michael Okuda, I had a little fun when detailing the Helm/Navigation stations. Instead of having a touch pad to ``move" their ship...I gave them a ``gear shifter". I duct taped a box to the floor just aft of the Helm/Navigation stations( this was also between the Bright green plastic kiddie chairs they would sit in ).
I cut a slit in the top of the box, and inserted a flattened cardboard tube. I pushed a pole from a small flag, through the box/tube to give it a pivot-point.
The top of the box(on both sides of the stick ) I printed the words``Station Keeping", ``Maneuvering Thrusters", ``Sub-light", ``Warp speed"....LUDICROUS SPEED! (Told ya I was having fun with it! ) The box/gearshift had just enough resistance...that the shifter would stay in any speed they selected.
The kids loved it! They spent many hours in it...and had many adventures together. My wife loved it, `cause she could easily hear them from her sewing room.
My only regret, is that I never took any pictures of that crazy, cardboard, ``Starship".

star trek theme park opening 2014

(When he was prince, he had a nonspeaking role in “Star Trek: Voyager.”)

The king, through his King Abdullah II Fund for Development, is the main local investor of the $1.5 billion project, according to The National, an Abu Dhabi-based newspaper.

The Red Sea Astrarium, the planned 184-acre entertainment resort, will feature a “'Star Trek'-themed center that will deliver a variety of multi-sensory futuristic experiences, culminating with a state-of-the art space-flight adventure that takes real-time immersive entertainment experiences to bold new heights,” according to the developer, Rubicon Group Holding.

But the theme park isn’t betting its future on science fiction. The site will also highlight the region’s rich history, and host a pavilion where businesses, students and others can learn about green energy, such as solar, wind and graywater harvesting. And to be all things to all tourists, the Middle East resort will also offer five-star accommodations, theater, fine dining, shopping and other non-futuristic amenities.

CBS Consumer Products, which is licensing Star Trek to the park, also continues to feed the Trekkie appetite this year with clothing, board games, character busts and collectables, and − cue the show’s theme music − the first “Star Trek”-themed Mr. Potato Head!

Um, just point us to the holodeck.

The Dragon Lady has gone between for the last time

Anne McCaffrey, whose books include Restoree and the entire series about Pern, is no longer among the living. Hers was the first series of books I'd ever read, starting in the mid-1970's. Here's the announcement from her son, Todd, through Facebook:

QUOTE

At about 5 p.m. Monday November 21st, 2011, Anne McCaffrey passed away. Mum was getting ready to go back to the hospital because she was feeling "puny" and collapsed while she was moving into her wheelchair. Her daughter, Georgeanne Kennedy, and son-in-law, Geoffrey Kennedy were with her. She was in no pain and it was over in an instant. She first had a heart attack in late 2000 and a stroke in 2001, so we were well-prepared and knew that we were on "golden time" with Mum these past ten years and more. She leaves behind an incredible legacy of marvelous books and a huge legion of fans. She won practically every major award in available to authors of science fiction and fantasy, including both Hugo and Nebula Awards, the American Library Association's Margaret A. Edwards award for Lifetime Literary achievement in Young Adult fiction, was an inductee into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame, and was a SFWA Nebula Grandmaster. She was also a great cook, magnificent mother, doting grandmother, ardent quilter, knitter, bridge player, horsewoman, fencer, actress, singer, and all-around nice person. We are blessed to have known her, just as we are blessed with the knowledge that she has touched so many lives and made such huge changes in them. Mum always said, "Don't just pay back a favor -- pass it on!" In light of that spirit, we ask that, instead of condolences or flowers, that commemorators make a donation to their favorite charity. We know that we haven't lost Mum -- that she has truly passed on her legacy of love and honor to all those who were touched by her -- and that we have only to open one of her books to find her again. Rest well, Mum, you've earned it!
