ROLE 08: NATURE ANNOUNCER
Have you ever wanted to be an announcer for a nature program, National Geographic, or Animal Planet? Maybe you just want to be the next Morgan Freeman. Well, now is your chance. This is a single-line role. Please note that the dialogue listed below is not from the script. It is merely a sample to help you with your audition.

SCENE - Nature programming

NATURE ANNOUNCER
In the Antarctic, every March since the beginning of time, the quest begins to find the perfect mate and start a family. This courtship will begin with a long journey - a journey that will take them hundreds of miles across the continent by foot, in freezing cold temperatures, in brittle, icy winds and through deep, treacherous waters. I shall dust off my mic as soon as my voice sufficiently recovers from the cold/flu-like thing that's haunted me for the last few days. cry.gif Many things I can sound like, but I don't want my auditions to all sound like Harvey Fierstein. I save that for parties and bat mitzvahs. icon_wink.gif

ROLE 09: THOTERES
This role is a major character in the episode. He is a Vulcan; a criminal Vulcan. Blend some stoicism with a slightly devious edge. The following is a collection of various lines put together into a single speech.

SCENE - (various)

THOTERES
Then your decision to follow him here was rather illogical. Lying to me would have been inadvisable. After I read your communique, I considered denying you access to the station. It suddenly occurs to me that you're not here for the reasons I thought you were. Furthermore, I'm theorizing that certain parties would not approve of your actions.

I have recorded a take of my audition. I'll listen and possibly redo a role or two, and edit out gaps between roles.

Should I send a separate file for each role, or all in one?

I can upload it to the web, to save your email box from clogging up. -- Which do you prefer?

I've recorded other amateur stuff, but this would be my first pro / semi-pro work.

This was great fun to do. -- I didn't try to scream, though. It didn't sound convincingly real.

What sound editing software do you use?

For these things I usually just use Windows Sound Recorder -- is there some other free program that is easy to use and allows you to paste sound files together or chop apart?

Thanks.

Rick

P.S. Some others have mentioned Audacity... but not sure what that is or if it is free and easy to use.

Well, it's certainly free. As for easy-to-use - I've used it a couple of times and have had to be walked through it. But it gives good results if you set things up right, and unlike the basic Windows sound recorder, it means if you're doing a multi-line take you can go back and cut out (or record over) a flub.

I use Audacity, currently 1.3.6 (beta) and I've been told to use the Utility > Normalize function before saving. I currently save MP3 at 192 bits.

Audacity is *free* open-source software. It's good. It wasn't too hard for an audio newbie like me to learn. I've been doing amateur voice-only recordings for over a year now. I'm not used to adding cool special effects and background music. I haven't needed to yet.

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Be sure to get and install the plug-ins!

The project moves fairly quickly; 1.3.4 was earlier this year and 1.3.6 is very new.

-----

To Andrew and the HF production team: If you have recommendations on settings, I'd be happy to use those instead.

OK, I'll need to split the file for each role, re-save, and send to you. Thanks!

Although I didn't try for it in these roles, I can do foreign accents well and some American and English-speaking accents OK. I speak French and a little Spanish with good accents.
