Here we go again:
The Gallant is another Scout recently assigned to Cadet training at the Frontier Guard Academy. She's just come off of active duty as a Combat Scout. While not currently top-of-the-line, she's the best Scout at the Academy and will reflect the sleeker design and palette of the Trident we just finished. Gallant will be one of the other more-prominent ships seen in the show. I don't believe we've decided on a class name for the Gallant. So it might be a fun exercise as construction takes place to name the class. Here are the sketches:
Gallant.gif ( 152.91K )
Number of downloads: 87(perspective) [attachment=5349:gallanttop.gif] (top) [attachment=5348:gallantbottom.gif] (bottom) Rather than mess around with nurbs again, I decided to go with spline modeling which worked reasonably well on the Trident. It just means a few hours of cursing and cleaning up points and polygons all over the place. First half of the top forward section modeled:
Gal1.jpg ( 12.96K )
Number of downloads: 21Bottom section modeled. I bolean subtracted a cutout at the back which will be built back up as different levels as seen in the bottom view. (this stuff was missing from the perspective shot, so I decided to go with the bottom view).
Gal2.jpg ( 24.25K )
Number of downloads: 22Looks very Trek at the moment, but that'll change pretty soon with the addition of the rear module, engine area, etc. Rob |

I was thinking the other day about the rings (or eggbeaters as I Rick likes to call them) and wondering about them.
Could they be detachable. From what I have gleaned from things those rings are needed for FTL travel, but not sub light travel. I was wonder if they could detach when in sub light mode or going into battle. I am thinking of some Star Wars Ships that come out of hyperspace and detache from their hyperdrive to then land on a planet, etc. First it would be a cool look to see the ship detach. Second, I love some of the lines on these shipes and would love to see them in space without their rings. |

Slow progress before lunch.
Looks like I made some interpretation errors in the initial meshing that are going to be a problem. I still have a few ideas, but I did consider starting over.

Sometimes "errors" turn out to be good things and as they say, "it's not over...".
Gal4.jpg ( 31.25K )
Number of downloads: 14I built up some rings that are designed to be an intermediary between the ones seen on Polaris and the Trident. So they are less angular and more squat like Polaris, but have the more advanced cutouts and glow bits. Also added the keel.

Leaning towards the Mk. 5's though having some variants for other ships is not a bad thing.

Spent most of the day unsuccessfully playing around with a Greeble plugin for 9X. There is just no way to mass replicate panels that need to look like they *fit* where they were put. (or at least sorta). So I did some more paneling, a lot places you might never see, and the boxy engineering section.

By county the rectangles as windows I count 6 decks on the top half and four on the bottom. So around 10? |

Like the USS Trident I find this ship interesting as well. i like the idea that someone mentioned earlier of the rings detaching. I think it would be better if the rings retracted into the ship when in sub speeds? Thats if you get what I mean?

Yeah, as technology moves to a more elliptical ring it would be easier to design a ship where the rings could fully retract. I definitely like the idea that we're seeing (and will see) an evolution of ship design over the course of the series.
