Dear Hidden frontier team
Firstly, A big thanks for the production you've done and keeping Star Trek going. I am a 3DS max 2011 user in the UK and I am learning how to design Starships in the program. I am fortunate to have all 25 Autodesk 2011 programs and want to get designing my own ships. Would anyone be able to give some advise or be willing to provide some textures, models and 3ds max files for me to mess about with of already completed ships/parts etc. With thanks James |

hi, there are lots of free starship downloads and textures at this site: http://www.foundation3d.com/ there are plenty of textures that come along with any given model you download. If you still need more textures, PM me and I'll send you some.

I've been itching with my 3DS MAX to do some action scenes for starships
so was wondering how they had done it in hidden frontier etc. Phaser, photons, planets etc? |

Sam's a good person to talk to about animation, since he does a fair bit.

I've been itching with my 3DS MAX to do some action scenes for starships so was wondering how they had done it in hidden frontier etc. Phaser, photons, planets etc? I know that hidden frontier used lightwave for a fair amount of their animation. I don't know how 3ds Max works, being a Lightwave fan myself, but In LW photons are simple point lights set to lens flare with an appropriate intensity envelope. Here's a tutorial I found on how to make a photon torpedo in 3ds Max 9: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAjY-tjQK4w Also, here's another mesh site that has a large number of ships/planets/interiors/etc. 3ds Max format. http://www.trekmeshes.ch/ hope these help. Hi, just saw your question. Yes, I'm Sam. This post has been edited by New Homelands: Nov 27 2010, 11:15 AM |

Thanks for your help on this, I've had this super powerful software sat in the draw for ages and had promised myself for many years ill finally get around to drawing starships.
Lightwave can be converted to 3ds max Is their any real tips or advice u can offer when modelling starships? or any other data/tools you can give me? |

Other than providing links to youtube videos and websites that have models, I'm afraid not. I can give general tips and advice, but nothing specific due to the fact I've never really used Max, sorry. To tell you the truth I'm still getting the hang of modeling starships myself. |

Im a semi trained Naval architect, so i know how to design ships but 3d graphics are something else. |

Aprt from the sites for downloading is their anything unique or you have access to your willing to share? sorry, no. I have a long list of sites that have tutorials (mostly for lightwave) and models for download, but when it comes to custom building them I don't have much experiance in that field. The one piece of advice I'd offer is to make use of youtube, I practically learned lightwave from tutorials found there, and I'd imagine there's a fair number of 3DS Max ones out there too. Once again, sorry I couldn't be of more help. |

That's quite alright, I just wanted to hear how people are finding their experience tools and so forth.
I don't have lightwave but was fortunate to be gifted a copy of the latest 3ds max. I suspect a trip to the booksellers for a help book soon! |
