"We know there's Auntie Mattie in there..."
OK, that flubbed line is from the Wine Dark Sea bloopers... but, if it were true... what TV or Movie Star should be recruited to play the role of Odyssey's "Auntie Mattie" ??

She sounds like a cartoon character used to educate Starfleet kids about 'our friend' antimatter.

Alice Ghostley gets my vote. Is she still around?

Sadly, I think that she died. I could be wrong, and I pray that she is still alive...but I seem to remember reading an article about her passing recently. I could go for her in that roll. Or perhaps Shirley McClain...she plays crazy pretty well.

Alice Ghostley did pass away back in September. I love her characters of Esmeralda on Bewitched and Bernice on Designing Women. She would have made a great Auntie Mattie.

I also love how we've taken this single line blooper, and in our minds created what I perceive as a slightly batty, but lovable character. Perhaps she is somewhere aboard Odyssey, in a cabin tricked out with tea cosies, lace armchair protectors, and a bunch of little khotzki figurines on every flat surface. And a cat. And a fuzzy sweater and slippers. Auntie Mattie. Maybe she's the mother of the chief engineer. I see her mumbling aout the weather, and every so often complaining about her arthritis, being a bit too cold, and that odd, barely perceptible buzzing that seems to indicate a matter/antimatter mix problem that could become a core breach if not attended to, by the way. It's just oddly funny to me.
Yes, Alice Ghostley would have been great. So would have been the actress who played the slightly befuddled Aunt Clara (or, continuing in the Bewitched theme... Paul Lynn in drag).
Moving on to characters still alive who could play her... how about Penny Marshall (thinking her Laverne & Shirley years); Dame Edna; Joan Rivers, or Graham Norton in a frumpy dress? Robin Williams (in his Mrs. Doubtfire role), Rachel Dratch (from Saturday Night Live) or even Whoopi Goldberg (that would be something!).

Amazing how one blooper line can be so remembered. Then again, classic Trek has been quoted for decades now.

Was wondering how long before our Forum member Auntie Matter would take to clock into this silly discussion. LOL

I've slipped under the radar this past couple of months due to a major software release I was managing. Now that it's out, I can again enjoy the frivolity of the forums!

Someone suggested to me that Auntie Mattie could be played by Ellen DeGeneres... recreating her dingbat role from "Finding Nemo" (she played Dorrie, the loveable, but dimwitted blue fish).

What about Barbara Adams?
She is the #1 convention visitor, and will also play a big role in the Gatekeeper movie, slated to be finished 2009 or 2010. . .
